"Josie? I hate to ruin your mission, but I truly don't believe I can love. I've never loved anyone; never wanted to."
Josie fixed her with a penetrating gaze. "What about your father?"
D.J. hesitated, then shrugged. What could telling Josie hurt? "You must know my mother's dead." At the angel's nod she continued. "My fatherheIwe" D.J. rubbed her eyes, which ached in an odd, burning way. "We don't get along. We barely speak. The sight of me is so painful for him; I don't think he's looked directly at my face for . . . I don't know.'' She paused, thinking back, then glanced at Josie. The angel's face held no pity, only concern. "I can't remember him ever looking me straight in the eye."
"Why?" Josie whispered.
"I must look like her. My mother. That's the one reason I can think of, though I don't know for sure. I've never even seen a picture of her. He destroyed them all when she died. Gran said when my mother died my father died too."
Josie nodded. "I see. I must admit, your father's behavior baffles me. I might have behaved the same way if I'd been left on earth without the man I loved, but if I'd had a child to care for, I would have had a very good reason to go on living."
